A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in an Acute Care Hospital is a licensed rehabilitation professional who evaluates and treats patients with communication, cognitive, voice, and swallowing disorders resulting from illness, injury, or surgery. Acute Care SLPs assess speech, language, cognition, and dysphagia to support patient safety and medical stability during hospitalization. They develop short-term, goal-focused treatment plans, recommend diet modifications, and provide strategies to improve communication and swallowing function. Working closely with physicians, nurses, dietitians, and rehabilitation teams, Acute Care Speech-Language Pathologists play a critical role in preventing complications, supporting recovery, and facilitating safe discharge planning.
