A Respiratory Therapist (RT) is a licensed healthcare professional who specializes in the assessment and treatment of patients with breathing and cardiopulmonary disorders. Working in hospitals, emergency departments, intensive care units, and outpatient clinics, RTs perform diagnostic tests, administer oxygen therapy and aerosol medications, and provide ventilator management for critically ill patients. They respond to respiratory emergencies such as cardiac arrest or acute distress, develop individualized care plans, and educate patients and families on managing chronic conditions like asthma, COPD, and emphysema. Respiratory Therapists are trained through accredited respiratory care programs and credentialed by the NBRC, playing a vital role in supporting lung health, improving quality of life, and delivering life-saving respiratory care across diverse healthcare settings.
